SIXTEEN

I WOULD love to say that we three spent a glorious getaway at my estate, but I would be lying. The pleasant conversations, the gourmet dinners, and hours of walking the grounds that Claude envisioned never came to fruition. The day after our dinner at Tobias’ apartment, Claude fell ill. He complained that he was coming down with some minor malady and demanded that I go back to the hotel until it passed.

“I don’t want you to get sick, too, my darling,” he said as I packed my bags to head back to the hotel. “You know how I can’t bear it if you’re ill.”

Lily met me at the door when I returned to my room. She took my bag from me as I stepped over the threshold.

“You’re back?” she chimed, genuinely surprised.

“Yes,” I said as I pulled the hat pin from my hair and placed it, as well as my hat, down upon the vanity. “Claude thinks that he’s coming down with something. He asked me to move back here temporarily so that I don’t catch whatever it is he has,” I explained.

“That was thoughtful of him...” A sudden knock on the door cut her answer short. A porter bearing the rest of my clothes stood on the opposite side when Lily answered it. She instructed the young man where to put everything as the thought to write to Tobias, to tell him of temporary change in my living arrangements, struck me. Once the porter was gone, carrying my letter to be sent, Lily began unpacking everything to keep it from wrinkling.

“You’re conflicted,” Lily said as she stepped out from the other room. She stood in the doorway and shook the wrinkles out of a nightdress, before folding it and draping it over her arm. “Mr. Moran is a wonderful man. I can see that you are fond of him. After all, he’s kind, considerate, affectionate, and you are his equal. That doesn’t mean that he is not without his faults,” she added, taking me by surprise.

Generally, Lily was considerate with her praise for Claude. It was rare for her to speak an ill-word against him. This was the first negative word that I had heard come across her lips since we first met him. She must have read my thoughts because she was quick to explain herself.

“I am not disrespecting Claude. He is too good of a man to deserve that, but there are things about him that don’t settle well with me.” I steadied myself to listen to what she needed to say.

“Monsieur Moran adores you. A blind man could see it, but does it ever bother you that whatever you two do, it’s always what he wants. Not once have I ever seen him ask what it is that you want to do.”

“Claude is a man who is used to getting what he wants. He likes what he likes, and I humor him,” I defended Claude although what Lily said stuck with me.

“He does favor his own interests, but it isn’t just that.
